The International Rescue Committee (IRC) in Kenya serves vulnerable populations in the Turkana and Garissa regions as well as in Eastleigh, Nairobi. The IRC implements programs in the areas of comprehensive primary health care, nutrition, protection, peace building, water and sanitation and hygiene (WASH), HIV/AIDS prevention, response to gender based violence, disaster risk reduction (DRR), livelihoods and governance. The IRC launched women’s protection and empowerment programs in Kenya in the immediate aftermath of the post-election crisis, and has initiated activities that support women and girls in Nairobi, Turkana Country and the Dadaab refugee camps through a variety of activities including health and GBV prevention and response programming. IRC is currently preparing to support the development of peace networks and platforms for women to be effectively involved in decision making and leadership. Applications are invited for the following positions:
GENDER AND CONFLICT SPECIALIST, Nairobi
Reporting to the Program Director, the Gender and Conflict Specialist will advise Project and project related staff, including IRC country management, on issues related to gender and conflict ensuring that prevention and mitigation strategies are put in place at all levels of program implementation.
Minimum Requirements
- Master’s Degree or higher in social work (MSW), public health (MPH), humanities, international affairs, other related field preferred.
- Minimum of two-three years of professional experience in a humanitarian or development context, specifically GBV programming or direct service provision to survivors of violence.
- Experience in emergency conflict, leadership, and peace programming in Kenya.
- Strong background in local GBV, leadership, and in other sector-specific technical skills and issues.
- Experience working with or in US Government-funded projects is recommended.
- Ability to multi-task and manage a number of different initiatives at one time, with flexibility and creativity.
- Ability and interest to work with a diverse and multicultural team in a collaborative, respectful and culturally appropriate manner.
- Demonstrated skills and experience in working with international or local non-profit organizations.
- Kenya experience, especially related to the post-election crisis.
- Fluency in spoken and written English, Swahili preferred.
