Social Support Officer at Feed The Children (K) in Kajiado Central – Kenya Jobs, Careers and Vacancies
Feed The Children (K) is expanding its HIV/AIDS program coverage to Kajiado central District and requires a person who has wide experience in the HIV/AIDS field to coordinate project activities in the area. The project emphasizes the delivery of HIV preventive services to the community. In addition, the project will increase care and support to people infected and affected by HIV/AIDS in order to mitigate the effects of the epidemic.
SOCIAL SUPPORT OFFICER
Feed The children (K) HIV/AIDS program requires a HIV/AIDS Social Officer to work in Mailwa & Maparasha in Kajiado Central District.
Duties and responsibilities:-
He/she will set technical direction for social support undertaken by the project, including the development of support groups.
- Conduct baseline studies using participatory approaches to identify the number of persons as well as orphans and vulnerable children (OVC) afflicted and affected by HIV/AIDS so as to determine their capacities, available resources and coping mechanisms.
- Develop and implement social support programs, work with Community Health workers and caregivers to provide counseling, home-based care and psychosocial support to persons living with HIV/AIDS (PLHIV) including orphans and vulnerable children (OVC) afflicted and affected by HIV/AIDS.
- Provide leadership using participatory community methods to improve the communities’ understanding of HIV/AIDS and their role in care and support of the infected people.
- Develop strategies to reduce or eliminate stigma and discrimination related to HIV/AIDS.
- Develop training/ education on HIV/AIDS for the people infected with HIV, their families and the community.
- Establish support groups and counseling services to provide individual and group therapy to the PLHIVs
- Initiate Income generating activities for selfreliance
- Encourage the youth to attend voluntary counseling and testing (VCT) to reduce risk behaviors aimed at decreasing stigma as more people know their HIV status.
- Prepare periodic progress reports and annual reports showing achievements against planned targets as well as providing justification for performance variances and areas of improvement
- Identify and network with the relevant Government Ministries, local NGOs, CBOs and FBOs to enhance service delivery, referral and effective response to the beneficiaries.
Qualifications
- A Bachelor’s degree in Social Work, or closely related discipline
- Sound technical knowledge and experience of programs designed to prevent HIV.
- Experience with and technical knowledge of current HIV/AIDS issues and trends.
- Training on Behavior Change Communication
- Good social and interpersonal skills.
- Have the ability to work in a culturally sensitive community
- Be Computer literate and a team player.
- Self-driven personality able to work with minimum supervision.
- Good verbal and written communication skills.
- Prior experience of working with the Maasai community and Knowledge of the their language will be an added advantage
