STRUCTURAL ENGINEER
This position holder shall analyze, design, plan, and research structural components and structural systems to achieve design goals and ensure the safety and comfort of users or occupants.He/She shall hold paramount the safety, health and welfare of the public via inspection and giving recommendations before structures are designed and as they are put up.
Responsibilities include:
- Undertaking site inspections to establish the nature of the ground and then design suitable foundations for the exhibition structures
- Calculations showing the sizes of building elements needed and why
- Must ensure that designs satisfy given design criteria, based on safety
- Design details: For example, provide drawings to show:- Layout of beams, walls, posts, foundations and their sizes; Connection joints; Truss layout etc
- Reinforcement that might be needed in the foundations.
- Shall exercise the highest degree of care and skill to avoid damages that can be sufferedas a result of negligence in structural design
- Shall strive to give recommendations thatallow for more cost-effective custom design, and also provides for opportunities to advance the technology
Requirements:
- Bachelor of Engineering degree in Civil engineering – specializing in Structural engineering; experience in exhibition construction is an added advantage
- Excellent numeracy and analytical skills
- In-depth scientific knowledge
- Good problem-solving skills
- Familiarity with computers and software programmes
- Good communication and inter-personal skills
- Good technical skills
- The ability to work well as part of a team
- The ability to use own initiative
- The ability to pay close attention to detail
- The ability to explain complex conceptual information in simple terms
- The ability to work to tight deadlines and remain calm under pressure
- The ability to stick to tight budgets
- A willingness to take responsibility for major decisions
