Database Administrator at National Drought Management Authority in Nairobi – Kenya Jobs, Careers and Vacancies

KRDP/ASAL DM is a 4-year project funded by the European Union (EU) under the 10th European Development Fund (EDF10) and implemented through direct decentralised operation under the Ministry of State for the Development of Northern Kenya and other Arid Lands with the purpose of strengthening institutional capacity to manage droughts and improve food security and livelihoods in arid and semi-arid areas (ASALs).

Applications are invited from qualified and experienced Kenya citizens for the following positions:

DATABASE ADMINISTRATOR (Ref No. KRDP /DA) (1 position)

Duties and Responsibilities
Reporting to the Technical Advisor, the Database Administrator will be responsible for:

  • Develop and maintain appropriate databases, database applications, database interface functions (data entry forms and reports) and products.
  • Day-to-day running of the project’s databases, including drought Early Warning System Database, Contingency Planning Database and any other database developed by the project.
  • Ensure applications are developed using both national and international software development standards and best practices.
  • Support integration of GIS and Remote Sensing /Earth observation products into the database development process.
  • Carry out other tasks as directed by the Technical Advisor.

Qualifications and Experience

  • Bachelors Degree in computer science or any other relevant degree.
  • Experience in managing development and maintenance of databases for large organisations.
  • Excellent theoretical and practical knowledge of database development, particularly in MS Access and SQL Server, and FOSS database management system such as MySQL and PostgreSQL.
  • Excellent theoretical and practical knowledge in use of GIS and Remote Sensing applications, particularly ArcGIS. Practical knowledge of a FOSS GIS and Remote Sensing application will be an added advantage.
  • Practical knowledge in analysis of quantitative and qualitative data using a statistical package such as SPSS, STATA.
  • Advanced knowledge of MS Office products, notably MS Access and MS Excel.
  • Ability to programme in PHP and HTML will be an added advantage.
  • Extensive formal or non-formal IT skills training will be an added advantage.
  • Five years minimum working experience.
  • Excellent communications skills (both written and verbal) in English.
  • Ready to travel to all parts of Kenya and spend substantial part of his/her time in the field.
